We are currently on our way to the trailhead at Springer Mountain State park in Georgia in a killer red Nissan Altima, piloted by the wonderful one and only Meagan Healy. Another quality product of New Hampshire, Meagan met Skip through a program called Bike and Build where selfless people ride bikes across the country and build houses for deserving families. (shameless plug alert) Check them out online and donate!
Anyway, after she picked us up from the airport, drove us around Atlanta, took us out to dinner, let us crash at her place, and cooked us a monster breakfast, she's taking four hours out of her day to drive us to the trail. I call shenanigans on anyone who claims people are inherently selfish.
Our packs are a bit heavier than we planned, about 45 pounds each, but we can toss things on an as needed basis. Not my harmonica, hopefully. Flip has already threatened to throw it in a river, but he hasn't heard me "play" yet... Maybe he'll change his mind.
The weather looks great for day one, and although there is an outbreak of Nora Virus on the trail, we are optimistic that our superior immune systems will savagely destroy whatever nature throws our way. Except bears.
We're looking at a few 14-16 mile days in a row to start us out until we get to Neel's Gap for our first stop off, and the first potential posting spot, so until then, happy trails!
